The first series of 24 is probably the weakest as it suffers from the uncertainty of not getting a full 24 episode order up front. When a new series is commissioned in America it is normally picked up for around 12 episodes and then the remainder are ordered based on how well the series does. It is not uncommon for show to get cancelled after 2 or 3 episodes. This delay in the commission means the writers have to build to episode 12 climax just in case, then when more episodes are added they frantically have drag out the remainder of the story. As will be the problem in all future series there is not enough plot to cover the 24 hours and show become heavily reliant on twists and turns, repeat story lines and B story lines that we don't really care about. Jack's daughter Kim's adventures in the first season really slow the action as she gets captured, escapes, gets captured and escapes. While this might have worked week on week it is not so successful when watching all the episodes in real time as it gets very repetitive... not that I ever watched the series in real time...

If you you have money to burn you could plonk it down on the first 6 series for around £120, which is a bargain if the show was a little stronger. The creators have really struggled on how to keep the show fresh, the double agents are so over done and the government is as crazy as ever. The seventh season was delayed partly due to plot issues, partly due to the writers strike and partly due to Kiefer Sutherland's incarceration.
