FILM NEWS: Bieber To The Future

August 28th, 2010

As a child of the 80′s you can imagine how gut wrenchingly, vomit inducing, wall poundingly frustrated I was to read this morning that not only were ‘sources’ talking of remaking Back to the Future, but that the roll was going to be offered to Justin Bieber.

We just had to put up with a nine year old Karate Kid, a 100 year old Indiana Jones, Clash of CGI Titans and Rambo the Undying, not mention the films that are just around the corner. Tron, Conan the Barbarian, Meatballs, Short Circuit, Footloose, The Thing and The Dark Crystal are all lined up for sequeals or remakes (or Prequeals in the case of The Thing). This is not mentioned the often rumoured, but likely to never get off the ground  films Ghostbusters 3, Goonies 2 and Gremlins 3.

So what is the obsession with 80s cinema, why do the studio bosses insist on looking back on to the past for future projects? Maybe because a lot of people in high positions were a product of the 80′s themselves.  They remember how much fun they had as a kid sneaking into a screening of the latest brat pack flick and they want replicate that magic (both of their childhood and at the box office). Remakes and squeals offer up a brand that people know, it allows for studio commissioners it to understand an idea without reading it. “If it was successful before, it will be again. I don’t need to see a script. Just plug $100 million dollars into it… and make it 3D.” This, I believe are the words utter by many studio boss.

Give it a few more years and the 90′s will be up.  We will see remakes of The Matrix, Thelma and Louise, Babe and the Full Monty… although maybe that wave is already coming in! We have just had Toy Story 3 and Clerks 2, while Scream 4 and Titanic 2 are just around the corner.

But back to Back to the Future, it appears, at least for now, that some of my childhood memories are safe. The Bieber story comes from the the Examiner, hardly a cornerstone of journalism integrity, and quotes unnamed studio execs and references British tabloids, none of which actually appear to be running the story.

Film News: Race to the toy aisle

June 29th, 2010

Back in the day films sold toys, now as hacks in Hollywood run out of computer games, comics and Disney rides they have turned to see what the toy aisle can provide. With Transformers and G.I. Joe already out there and Battleships, Monopoly and Rock ‘em Sock ‘em robots on the way, the race to find the next toy property is on.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the men behind Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs are in final negotiations to write and direct the Lego movie. Although there is no word on the plot it will be a mix of live action and CGI much like the upcoming Smurfs movie.

If the writers can capture the same humour seen in the computer games, it might have some funny moments, but as for heart, character development and plot — those pieces might be missing… or lost down the back of the sofa.

Film News: Rock ‘em Suck ‘em

June 24th, 2010

Because the is no idea so bad that some Hollywood studio won’t consider it, 60′s children’s game Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots could be headed to the big screen with Wolfgang Peterson at the helm. No doubt pitched as Iron Man meets Rocky, the film may actually have been beaten to punch by Real Steel, which sees Hugh Jackman as an outgoing prize fighter who is forced to stage battles between bots in order to survive.

Film News: Carter Beats the Devil and heads into production.

June 22nd, 2010

Carter Beats the Devil was an excellent book about turn of the century stage magician Charles Carter, although a fictionalised account of his life it does capture the golden age of magic as technology was making huge leaps forward. Oh, you say, so it is like Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige then. Well there are some similarities, which might explain why Carter Beats the Devil has struggled to get off the ground since Tom Cruise left the project back in 2002.

However fresh of scripting Treasure Island screenwriter Michael Gilio set to adapt Glen David Gold’s book for director Alexander Payne.

Producer Jon Shestack has it set up at WB, and says “”I’ve been trying to get Warner Bros to buy it since the day it came out and that it’s finally happening is enough to make me believe in magic.”

TV News: British Comedy Awards moves to Channel 4

June 8th, 2010

The British Comedy Awards is moving to Channel 4 after 20 years on ITV, it has been announced. Apparently they decided the channel that hosts the show should at least do some comedy themselves.

Channel 4 secured broadcast rights to the annual event for three years. The network said it would bring the show “bang up to date, reinvigorating the brand and and reverting to a live broadcast”.

Channel 4′s head of comedy Shane Allen said: “The British Comedy Awards are crucial in recognising the excellence, originality and rude health of the comedy industry. At their best, the awards have a spirit of mischief, hilarity, surprise and danger about them, so Channel 4 feels like a natural fit.”

Film News: Don Quixote rides again

May 18th, 2010

Lost in La Mancha is the amazing documentary that charts the downfall of director Terry Gilliam‘s long time passion project “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote”. The result is every bit as dramatic and entertaining as the film that never made it to the silver screen.  Gilliam however would not give up on this dream project and after years of legal wrangling he has announced at Cannes that film starts shooting in September. Unfortunately Johnny Depp who starred in the original and was willing to return is tied up with a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie and so Ewan McGregor will take as place as a film-maker that is charmed into joining Don Quixote’s (Robert Duvall) eternal quest for his ladylove, becoming an unwitting Sancho Panza.
