TV News: Pilots and Pickups (part 4)

May 16th, 2010

Sorry, this was later than planned, but this rounds out the pilots that have been pitched by the networks.  This final installment looks at the cable channels.

Showtime: The first pickup is Lisa Kudrow’s online series Web Therapy, despite “The Comeback” being a flop for HBO, this online series has done quite well. Showtime had picked up all 45 10 minute episodes and will edit them together for half hour shows.

AMC has got a lot of attention recently for hits such as Mad Men and Breaking Bad, they aim to follow up that with a series of high concept dramas.  first up zombie drama “The Walking Dead”, which is a brave choice considering the fate of “Babylon Fields”. There is a new conspiracy thriller called “Rubicon” and obligatory police drama “The Killing”/

The History Channel is turning to drama to tell the story of America’s most famous political family the Kennedys. This project has already been criticised by some for what is seen as an attempt at character assassination.

TBS has its comedy “Franklin & Bash” is about struggling lawyer friends, family drama about a sibling-owned private-security firm “In Security” (get it? /its a play on words), there is police drama with “Uncle Nigel” and a period student series “Glory Daze”

There are more superheroes on Syfy after they picked up “Three Inches” the story of a superhero who has the power to move things three inches.

This side of the pond ITV has picked up the rights to “Renegade: The Making of a President,” turning Richard Wolffe’s insiders tale of Obama’s historic presidential run into a miniseries.

TNT has lined up Jason Lee to an oddball police detective in “Memphis Beat”, Dylan McDermott to play a cop in Jerry Bruckheimer’s “Dark Blue” and Angie Harmon as a Boston detective in “Rizzoli & Isles”.

Epix is dipping its toe into drama with  “Still Holding,” which will explore the disparate worlds of three people living in L.A. It’s based on Wagner’s novel of the same name.  There is little news on the channels other pilot “Tough Trade,” revolving around a musical family dynasty in Nashville.

The final call for pilots will be on 17th May, keep a look on Pilot Watch for reviews as the shows sneak out.

TV News: Pilots and Pickups (part 3)

May 3rd, 2010

In this continuing series of touring the networks pilot offerings we move on to CBS and the CW.

CBS is making waves for the first twitter inspired comedy series starring William Shatner “Shit My Dad Says”. The channel that loves spins offs is delivering yet another one this time for Criminal Minds and staring Forest Whitaker. More legal drama comes with Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell as flashy defence attorneys in Vegas in “Defenders” and the possibility Tom Seleck in Regans Law, a story about 3 generations of New York cops. Sissy Spacek will star in a new medical drama which is America’s answer to Austraila’ Flying Doctors. Little is known about other drama offerings “ATF”, “Chaos” and “Mike and Molly”.

“True Love” a comedy about a group of friends in Gotham staring Tyler Labine and Jason Biggs is catching some early buzz. There is newlywed comedy to be had in Hitched, while former Scrubs star Sarah Chalke has signed up to appear in Team Spitz a high school single camera comedy.

Cheerleading drama “Hellcats” looks like the CW’s answer to the massively popular Glee. Nikita is a redo “Le Femme Nikita” and “Betwixt” is a fantasy vehicle about changelings tasked with saving humans. The standard stab at medical drama comes in the form of an as of yet untitled show about Harvard medical students.

TV News: Pilots and Pickups (part 2)

May 1st, 2010

Our Pilot round up continues with the big five networks.

Fox is on the lookout for the next big comedy hit and having shockingly looked beyond Seth Macfarlane to find it. “Traffic Light” a live action sit-com about three male friends is getting a lot of positive heat. “My Name is Ear” creator Greg Garcia has produced a single dad comedy “Keeping Hope Alive”. “Breaking In” is an office comedy starring Christian Slater (the timing of this could be good as The Office heads into its possible final season.  Orlando Jones has landed a role in Fox comedy pilot Tax Man. Finally for comedy we have “Running Wilde”  a reunion of Will Arnett and “Arrested Development’s” Mitch Hurwitz and Jim Vallely.

In drama “Prison Break” team show they are not one trick ponies with “Breakout Kings”, a show about ex-cons tracking down fugitives. Caitlin Fitzgerald has landed the female lead on Fox’s comedy pilot Most Likely to Succeed. The Shield creator has a Chicago-set cop drama “Ride-Along”. There is a legal thriller “Pleading Guilty” while con man drama “Midland” has dark themes that might make it more suitable for sister channel FX.

ABC has lined up Matthew Perry for “Mr. Sunshine” while Friends scribe Shana Goldberg-Meehan has an as of yet untitled couples-centric comedy. “It Takes a Village,” about a divorced couple and their new spouses raising a 15-year-old boy.”Wright vs. Wrong” has a strong femme cast with Debra Messing, Cheryl Hine and Carrie Fisher. Southern Discomfort sees a conservative Texan who is overwhelmed when his grown children move back in with him.

In drama “Off the Map” is about doctors in a tropical clinic. “187 Detroit” is a docu-styled cop show, while True Blue centres on a group of San Francisco detectives who reunite to solve the murder of one of their colleagues.  No Ordinary Family revolves around an American family who discover that they possess strange abilities. Body of Evidence is the procedural series centres on a brilliant medical examiner and former neurosurgeon who solves crimes.

Don’t have as much info what is going down at NBC, but here is what I do have. Legal ensembler “Kindreds”, conspiracy thriller “The Event”, romantic dramedy “Love Bites”. Paul Reiser will appear in “Next” and there is a workplace vehicle called “Outsourced”. There is the relationship-centric “perfect Couples” and the family-rooted “This Little Piggy”. “Beach Lane” is comedy, while “The Chase” is an actioner about federal marshals tracking down fugitives. Beau Bridges has reportedly signed up for the Rockford Files remake.

The second of three superhero vehicles comes to NBC with “The Cape” a story about a cop who turns into a masked hero to clear his name. While Jimmy Smits will portray a Supreme Court Justice who quits the court to head a private practice.

Stay tuned for part 3 where we look at CBS and the CW has to offer.

April 28th, 2010

Word is sneaking about what treats we possibily have for the fall TV scedules. Big questions holes are open with shows such as Lost, 24 and possibly Two and Half Men coming to a close.

Starz is enjoying extra attention with the success of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, sticks to historical drama with post-Civil War drama “Men of the Dusk”, this joins previously greenlit show “William the Conquerer” and “Peacekeeper”  as well as international co-productions “Pillars of the Earth” and “Camelot.”

HBO who have already picked up new drama Treme for a second series has sent horse racing drama “Luck” to pilot. “Tilda” a series that centres on a powerful Hollywood blogger and “Enlightened” about as a self-destructive woman who has a revelatory experience at a treatment centre after she suffers a nervous breakdown.

Over at the BBC Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are teaming up again to produce a comedy called “Life’s Too Short” staring Warwick Davies who you might also know as Willow, Wicket the Ewok or Professor Filius Flitwick. The show will be an observation comedy which follows Warwick’s day-to-day life in a small world where big things happen.

FX sticks it out in the south with new pick up “Outlaw Country” a family thriller set against the back drop of Southern organized crime. This will join Shawn Ryan dramedy “Terriers” about an ex-cop starting a private detective business and “Lights Out” about a former heavyweight boxing champ who struggles to reconnect with his wife and three daughters.

TV News: Glaad for Glee

April 18th, 2010

US musical TV series Glee has been named best comedy series at the Glaad media awards in the US for its positive portrayal of gay characters. Because, as we know, all of the gays are fashion conscious, high pitched, musical loving gossip queens. Yep, not a stereotype in sight.

Creator Ryan Murphy revealed that Kurt, played by actor Chris Colfer, would have a boyfriend in the next series and the pair would be school prom kings. He added that the gay character “would never be a victim” in the hit show.

Meanwhile Drew Barrymore was the recipient of the Vanguard Award, which is given to people who have increased the visibility of the LGBT community. The actress says it is no big deal. “I was born, bred and raised amongst diversity,” Barrymore said. “It has defined me and made me the person I am today.”

Film: One Man and His Ted

April 13th, 2010

Having taken over TV on Sunday nights Seth Macfarlane is now setting his sights on something larger. According to Entertainment Weekly the man behind Family Guy, American Dad, The Cleveland show and the worst live special since Rosie O’Donnell’s Variety Show is in talks with Universal to direct his feature film.

The R-rated film written by Seth and fellow Family Guy scribes Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild is about a man who as a child wished he could talk to his Teddy Bear, this wish was granted and the Teddy Bear just kept talking following the boy into adulthood where having a talking bear starts to get in the way of real relationships.

The film will be live action with a CGI bear voiced by MacFarlane. This deal would put a hold on the long awaited Family Guy movie that both Fox and MacFarlane have been wanting to do for some time.

TV: Golden Girls MILF Porn

April 6th, 2010

Sadly Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks never copyrighted his idea to turn classic TV shows into porn films. However someone else did. The Brady Bunch, The Office, Happy Days, Bewtiched and The Cosby Show have all received the XXX treatment.  Then someone released that no one had tackled the popular MILF porn market with adaptation of the Golden Girls.

Adult stars Lisa Ann, Puma Suede, Julia Ann and Diamond Foxxx will take on the leads in roles made famous by Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty, Bea Arthur,  Betty White.

Trailers from other TV porn parodies.
