Nick James hosts a debate sparked by Lean’s depictions of the British Empire.

Join us for an illustrated debate, digging beneath the surface of David Lean’s films to reveal the attitudes and identities of a nation on the brink of a new era.

Growing up at the height of the British Empire, David Lean would go on to be the principle pallbearer at its funeral. In his epic films Lawrence of Arabia, A Passage to India and The Bridge on the River Kwai we see him evoke powerful moments of imperial decline, but not always with great awareness to post-colonial sensitivities. Sight & Sound editor Nick James hosts an evening of informed and illustrated debate, digging underneath the surface of Lean's films to reveal the attitudes and identities of a nation on the brink of a new era.
