Welcome to MY ONE WORD, a unique short screenplay competition which will stretch your creative writing skills and imagination to new limits!

MY ONE WORD is inspired by the proverb "a picture is worth a thousand words" and we want to inspire you to create fresh, powerful stories using images and just one word.

Through an innovative programme 12 writers will have their short film screenplays developed by film industry executives and judged by award winning writers including Jonathan Harvey. 4 scripts will then be selected to be taken into production.

This inspiring project will provide young emerging writers and directors with a unique opportunity to create a short film with one twist: you must explore your world, as you know it, using only one word of dialogue.

MY ONE WORD focuses the power of visual storytelling by creating a series of short movies with only one word. If you love to write, this is your chance to show off your talents!

So get writing but remember - your screenplay must only have one word!

• What is MY ONE WORD?

  MY ONE WORD is a short film competition to encourage young emerging writers to use the power of the image to tell their story through a series of 3 minute short films with just one word.

• Can my Screenplay have large dialogue sequences?

  No. Each film can only have “one word” but how you interpret this rule is up to each writer.

• What is the top prize?

  Up to 12 scripts will be selected for an the script development programme which will include a residential script development workshop followed by 1-to-1 mentoring by a film industry script editor supported by performed readings. The final 4 scripts will be produced by White Lantern Film. They will be premiered at BAFTA (subject to BAFTA availability) and entered into film festivals around the world..

• I am having problems uploading my document, what should I do?

  Your script should be saved in one of the following formats: .txt, .doc, .fdr or .pdf. Check your treatment is saved in one of these formats. If you are still having problems, try a different web browser or email us at info@myoneword.co.uk but you must upload your entry to be considered.

• What is the word count for my submission?

  There is no word limit; however, all scripts should have an approximate running time of 3 minutes. Using 12pt Courier Font, your script should run to about 3 – 5 standard A4 pages.

• Am I allowed to work with another person to write my script?

  Yes, collaborations, partnerships and co-writers are accepted; however, please only submit this work once in the lead writer’s name.
