Short Story

Opportunity: Write for Rights 2011
Run By: Amnesty International
Genre: Letter
Entry Fee: none
Deadline: 31st December 2011

Amnesty International are currently running a Write for Rights campaign and you may want to get take part.

During the campaign we are asking people in the UK to stop using their email, Facebook and twitter accounts for a moment and write a personal handwritten letter on behalf of one of ten Amnesty cases who are experiencing, or who are under threat of human rights abuse. To read about the ten cases you can go to www.amnesty.org.uk/write

We are celebrating letter writing as a way of achieving incredible results in an Amnesty context; we constantly get amazing feedback from those who benefit from Amnesty letters about how they gave them hope, strength and improved their conditions.  For example...

"I received letters written and drawn by children aged between five and 10 years, from all over the world. Those letters had a magical effect on me. They inspired me and made me stronger to endure the detention and my unjust conviction. Every week I was waiting for those letters, I was reading them again and again, thinking of those people who took five minutes, or maybe more, to write or to draw. Five minutes of their time, gave me the energy to survive two years of unlawful imprisonment”

Chekib El Khiari, Moroccan anti corruption activist and former Amnesty prisoner of conscience who was released from prison in April 2011.

On a more general level we also want people in the UK to embrace letter writing once again as a powerful way to connect with their fellow human beings. We have made a short film as testament to that power, which you might like to watch: http://vimeo.com/32159954

There are a number of different ways in which you could support the campaign- some big, some small but all much appreciated. Here are a few suggestions;

  • Write a letter to or on behalf of one of our ten cases.  We have lots of materials to support you in your letter writing, which we could send if you're interested and lots of content online - www.amnesty.org.uk/write
  • Help spread the word - tell your friends and family about the campaign and encourage them to write letters too.
  • If you're on Twitter tweet support for Write for Rights Day on the 9th or 10th of December by sending a message out – feel free to personalise this as much as you want but please keep the hashtag and the link:  ‘Today, step away from twitter for 10 minutes. Write a letter that could change a life for #WriteforRights http://amn.st/u0498b
