So you may think there is no money in writing for theatre, well tell that to Andrew Lloyd Webber. Theatres are more willing to read your scripts than television and film companies and success on the stage could be the perfect stepping stone to something that will pay a little better.
All these places will accept unsolicited material, but please read up on their guidelines. Some like the scripts posted, some like them e-mailed. Some are looking for one acts, others are looking for musicals. Please research the theatre and their past productions, even better contact them first and ask them about the sort of material they would be interested in. Do they have a themed season, are they desperate to do a political play or a sketch show.
Be respectful and don't bombard them with your sitcoms and feature films which were never written for the stage in mind; sure they had a helicopter take off in Miss Siagon, but most if not all of these places do not have the budget such things.

The Royal Court Theatre
If you are intending to submit a script to the Royal Court, please do so by mail only. Similarly, enquiries should not be submitted by email, rather mail or fax (on above number). Please enclose a half-page synopsis, and a stamped addressed envelope for its return.

The first port-of-call is always the script. No writer is considered and no relationship forged without their work being their introduction to the Theatres. The Theatres currently receive over 400 scripts per year. All scripts are read by a panel of freelance readers, and responded to with constructive criticism.

If you've written a script and would like to send it to Center Theatre Group, please submit a brief description of the work and from five to ten sample pages. Your description need not be a full synopsis of the plot. Describe the play—the world, the characters, the conflict, your reasons for writing it. The sample pages, of course, will be most helpful to us in deciding whether or not to request the full manuscript. Multiple submissions are not encouraged.

Balagan Theatre is currently accepting unsolicited scripts with an emphasis on world and Northwest premieres to be considered for future production. To submit full-length plays, adaptations, translations, and musicals, please include a hard copy of the script with a cover letter, bio or resume, CD and/or score (if applicable) and an SASE. We would also appreciate notes on the play's development and production history, if any.

Yale Repertory Theatre accepts submissions of full-length plays, musicals, translations and adaptations. Playwrights must submit their work either through established agents or by first sending a letter of inquiry, accompanied by a brief synopsis, cast breakdown, a ten-page dialogue sample, and a résumé. The Literary Office will review these materials and contact playwrights regarding Yale Rep's interest in reading a full manuscript.

As a theatre company producing new work in addition to classic productions, we are always looking for new, dynamic scripts from new writers. We specialise in musical theatre, however, we read every script we receive and aim to produce at least one submitted script a year.

The Dearne Playhouse New Writing Scheme is committed to developing and showcasing new writers and their scripts. The scheme welcomes all script submissions but is particularly looking for local writers who address subjects that might be of special interest to people in Yorkshire.

If you have a completed script you could use our Script Reading Service. This is open to any writer, director or producer to send in a script to be read and assessed. We are no longer accepting all submitted scripts for reading. When a script arrives we will judge whether to read it on the basis of the first ten pages. The criteria are quality of writing and relevance for the Playhouse's audience and programming.
